Christmas of 2014, I flew into HNL, walked into my parents' and my childhood home to be told that my dad was diagnosed with cancer and my mom diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I returned to Seattle with a marriage proposal waiting for me in January 2015. I was conflicted and 2015 was a rough year. By July 2015 I was offered a job back home in Hawaii and my then-fiancee refused to follow me. Months of tears and moving back home in time for Thanksgiving, I decided to do myself a favor and fulfill my childhood dreams; be an artist and a surfer. This piece resonates this story.
