"Hong Kong Arrival" 2006 is about my first time living abroad and on my own. This piece was envisioned and painted in the dominantly expatriate area of Lan Kwai Fong, a place we fondly called "LKF." Inspired, I created a portrait of a unique urban environment that I spent years dreaming of visiting. I was lucky to have had an internship there during my 20s.
In collaboration with Eric C. Morgan, we have started Date By Date Productions. Find more at www.datebydateproductions.com
A reluctant self-portrait, "Sol Reignited-In-Flame, Discovered" is the story of my own journey through adversity only to be witnessed by a man I was in no state to properly connect with. Absorbed by being set ablaze, she tries to hide, but how can she? She's the sun.
The female figure is influenced by childhood stories of Pele, and is the Sun transforming like a phoenix.
Following "My Cup Filling Project," the Eternal Cup-filling Man is the male counterpart to my semi-anonymous self-portrait work.
“My Core, Integrity & Journey” was made as a tribute to the first love-of-my-life, my mom; my core of who I am today. This ever-evolving piece (formerly, More Core & My Integrity, 2016) centers on finding ground throughout the trials of my own and ever happening journey, building trust within myself and facing the future with courage.
After almost a year after finishing "Sol Reignited-In-Flame, Discovered," my self-portraits and my male figures were always in separate compositions. I felt (and still do) find a distance between these two, but... I know they think of each other. In a burst of inspiration, I combined my male and female compositions; still keeping the integrity of my real-life tension, but now creating a balance and the yearning of the two to finally have their "when the time is right" moment.
“Definitions Of Her” 10-part series
12”x12” Acrylic on paper, custom framed 17”x17”
These pieces are block prints of a female surfer silhouette. Originally, she is holding a shortboard in one arm but the silhouette has evolved into the strength a woman must carry through hardships. These come from a 10 block-print series “Definitions Of Her” where I reimagine this silhouette into 10 different versions. The prints have evolve over the course of the COVID pandemic, inspired by the need for resilience, honor and the hope for recovery.
Sometimes I get tired of my own artistic intensity. It's like having a strict kind of diet but there's a day when you just want a piece of candy! Let't take it easy! What's my visual candy? Rainbows, Puppies and Shave Ice! Well, occasionally unicorns but quite frankly, I'm not very good at painting them.
We started paying rent on March 1st. We had to move out by August 1st. We sneaked back in and painted a mural in 4 hours. This is our story.
